Poul Kjaerholm föddes år 1929 i Østervrå, Danmark där han studerade till snickare innan han tog examen år 1953 vid Kunsthåndvaerkerskolen i Köpenhamn. Där studerade han under Hans Wegner och Jørn Utzon, två tongivande formgivare som påverkat dansk designhistoria och även kom att inspirera Kjaerholm. Hanne designed the building while Povl took care of the interiors. The simple, quiet house has since become recognized as a classic. Her design for a marina in Nivå (1968) brought her the Academy's small gold medal although she was the only woman among 18 participants. Poul Kjærholm designed most of his furniture for furniture manufacturer Ejvind Kold Christensen, and their collaboration lasted from 1955 until Kjærholm's death in 1980. Ejvind Kold Christensen had a background as sales manager for Carl Hansen & Son, and in 1949, he introduced Hans J. Wegner to Carl Hansen & Son's director, Holger Hansen, who saw potential in the young, previously unknown Introduction to Poul Kjærholm with Paul Jackson at Jackson Design in Berlin.
